Happy Thanksgiving

 

Thanksgiving in another country is probably always unique. We've heard that the "thing to do" in Japan is to go to KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). Here we were able to get a turkey...pretty much because we can shop at the military grocery store and they ship Butterball's in from the U.S. Many of our other American friends are not so lucky. If they can find a turkey, because that is not a common food here, it's not as tasty. We did have mashed potatoes (though the locals don't make potatoes like we do), green bean casserole (french onions courtesy of the military), six-cup fruit salad, cranberry sauce, stuffing (a local, different, but good brand), rolls (local ones that are more like buns), pumpkin pie (canned pumpkin courtesy of the military) and cheesecake (cream cheese also courtesy of the military, but mostly because of the price difference). Our turkey was probably about 14 pounds. That's about as big as one you will be able to fit in an oven around here. Many of our American friends are either employed by the Singaporeans or work for an American company that employs Singaporeans. Since it is not a holiday over here, many of them did their meal after work that day or over one of the weekends. We brought several of our decorations, but it's just a different feel. The kids did have this holiday off of school because it is an American holiday.  We spent some of it up at the school playing.
